Guitar wizard and groove-maker Adrian Quesada has played ACL Fest with his Austin-based band, Grupo Fantasma, but takes the stage at Zilker for the first time with his new project, Spanish Gold, featuring drummer Patrick Hallahan (My Morning Jacket) and lead vocalist Dante Schwebel (City and Colour). So, where does the man who has jammed with Prince like to eat when he’s home in Austin?
“Papas rancheras tacos at San Juanitas are always a hit; Tacorrido good for on the run; Justine’s for a date night with my wife; Whip In for great food and beer; and there’s the super obvious, super consistent mainstays like Hopdoddy (buffalo burger or veggie) and the occasional Uchi splurge – they’re obvious for a reason.”
Quesada says that while eating on the road may sound glamorous, the main concern is making sure you start your day with a decent cup of coffee. When he has the option of being picky in certain towns, Quesada looks for Ethiopian cuisine in Minneapolis, San Francisco and Washington D.C., and Asian food in Seattle. As for favorite stops around the country, the Laredo native namechecks the Hamilton in Washington, D.C., Brooklyn Bowl in New York City, and the Earl in Atlanta. And, when in need of a hangover fix, there’s always Waffle House.
Adrian Quesada and Spanish Gold perform at the Samsung Galaxy Stage at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 4 and 11.
