Update: Austinite Tony Beasley is the man who had the courage to throw down for the Turbo Dog.

He clarifies the record, saying that he paid with his debit card, and thinks he went from dog-slamming to watch Atmosphere. As he said in his email to me, “but whatever …”

It was Beasley’s first Fun Fun Fun Fest, and he said he was inspired to order the Turbo Dog out of “sheer, morbid curiosity.”

Beasley said he’s using the unique and very Austin-centric story as a recruitment tool.

“This is the type of thing I am sharing with my family in my efforts to get people to move to Austin, so, thanks,” Beasley writes.

Longtime Fun Fun Fun Fest sponsor Frank has been serving up dogs at the festival for years (even before they were an actual restaurant). They offer a few of their classics from the restaurant, some daily specials, and always create a tongue-in-cheek dog that pays homage to one of the headliners.

In 2012, it was the Run DMC (pineapple sauce, cole slaw and crumbled potato chips). Last year, Snoop Dogg got the hot dog treatment with frank topped with hemp cheese, malt liquor mustard, and edible 24k gold dust. That one was priced at the comical rate of $24.20.

That’s a lot of dough for a dog, but it paled in comparison to this year’s Top Dog. Frank created a Judas Priest Turbo Dog (a nod to the band’s 1986 album “Turbo”). The description? As simple as it was mysterious: “Feelin’ reckless? Roll the dice …” The cost? $250.

Surely nobody bought one of those, you say. You’d be wrong, apparently. According to a story relayed by Frank co-owner Daniel Northcutt to Fun Fest co-founder James Moody, one dude decided to roll the dice.

The story  is that one dude threw down $250 on Frank’s counter and ordered the Turbo Dog. In return he received a plain mustard dog, a VIP card for free hot dogs for the weekend, and five $100 bills. The anonymous fest-goer then tipped the staff $100, ate his dog, and went off to rock out to King Diamond. 

I guess sometimes it pays to roll the dice.
