Austin’s pizza boom continues with the new Unit-D Pizzeria in East Austin. The restaurant opened last night at 2406 Manor Rd. in the strip that is home to Dai Due and Sugar Mama’s. The pizzeria’s name is derived from the unit number at the Manor Road address.
Unit-D serves a roster of a half-dozen Neapolitan-inspired wood-fired pizzas, under the guidance of executive chef CT Turgeon. Turgeon, who previously served as executive chef at Haddington’s, returned to Austin following a stint at 42 Grams in Chicago. The menu also features three salads and wood-fired sides (olives, carrots, and rapini). Unit-D Pizzeria makes many of their ingredients in house, including lamb sausage (which they serve on a pizza with dill), mozzarella, pizza dough, ricotta, and accoutrements for cheese and charcuterie plates. The restaurant serves craft beers (cans, bottles, and draft) and wine.
The dessert menu includes a mango rice pudding, a nod to the Indian heritage of managing partner Shalou Barth. Barth left the corporate world a few years ago to begin a career in hospitality. Her husband, Eric Barth of A Parallel (which designed Qui), designed Unit-D.
“As a resident of Cherrywood, I am thrilled to bring pizza back to Manor Road and look forward to offering something really special to the area,” Barth said. “Chef CT and I traveled for two weeks to the best pizzerias in the US to conceive a highly approachable and ingredient‐driven menu appropriate for our concept, while my husband, Eric, and I focused on creating a space and ambiance that our friends and neighbors would enjoy spending time in.”
Unit-D Pizzeria is open Sunday-Thursday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday until 11 p.m. They are developing a take-out program they’ll roll out later this summer, and may consider lunch in the future.
