South Austin favorites Home Slice Pizza are opening a location north of the Colorado River. The family-friendly restaurant will occupy the long vacant building at 501 E. 53rd St. (at the corner of North Loop and Duval).
Owners Jen and Joseph Strickland and Terri Hannifin have long considered a second location but were waiting for the right time and the right space. They wanted to find a stand-alone building and felt it was important for the restaurant to be located in a neighborhood, as was their intention with the first location they opened in 2005.
“We march to the beat of our own drummer and we do things our own way, and we want to be a restaurant that will be around for generations to come,” Joseph Strickland said. “We want to be around for the long term and be sustainable without putting our product or service at risk. We’re ready as a company to do what we do and delight a whole bunch of new people who don’t even know about us yet.”
Construction for the new Home Slice will likely begin in the winter or spring, with opening estimated to be approximately a year away. There are still many details to be determined, but the Stricklands said diners can expect all of the favorites from the current Home Slice menu, along with take-out options, and plenty of on-site parking at the lot previously occupied by Melvin’s Deli Comfort trailer.
See where Home Slice landed on my list of best pizza in Austin earlier this year.
(Side note: The dine-in location of Home Slice will be closed Monday (9/14) thru Thursday (9/17) at 5 p.m. as the Home Slice crew makes its annual pizza pilgrimage to New York City. During that time, More Home Slice will continue to be open its normal business hours.
