Beloved Austin dive bar Lala’s Little Nugget now shares a patio with newly opened Stubb’s Bar-B-Q at 2207 Justin Lane in Crestview. The famous barbecue restaurant will smoke its meat at the original 801 Red River St. location and deliver it to Lala’s, where it will be served from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday. In addition to barbecue plates, Stubb’s will also serve nachos, BBQ sliders and Tex-Mex tacos.
Stubb’s has been expanding in recent years, opening at the Mean Eyed Cat just west of downtown and at Graceland Grocery in Oak Hill. Stubb’s, Mean Eyed Cat and Graceland are operated by FBR Management, which also owns and operates six other restaurants and bars around town, and FBR principal Matt Luckie and partners own and operate Lala’s.
The question is: Will these ancillary Stubb’s locations be able to stay open? At the end of 2015, One World Foods, which owns Stubb’s barbecue sauce, sued Stubb’s Austin Restaurant Co. for trademark infringement and wanted the non-Red River outposts closed, or in the case of Lala’s, never opened. Stubb’s Austin Restaurant Co. filed a countersuit this year claiming there was no deal in place that kept them from expanding. Luckie had no comment today when asked about the legal status of the restaurants.
