Malaga Tapas & Bar closed its doors Sunday. One of the early-movers in the Warehouse District downtown, Austinite Greg Schnurr opened Malaga in 1998 and moved the restaurant to its 2nd Street District about eight years ago.

“In a growing city filled with the entrepreneurial spirits of new private business owners, an abundance of new concepts are gracing Austin’s vibrant culinary scene,” Malaga co-owner Barret Brannam said in a statement. “Malaga is proud to have been at the forefront of such proven and popular culinary traditions, earning its title as Austin’s original Spanish tapas bar. Thank you Austin for all your support over the years.

“The extended Malaga family suffered an emotional blow last month when former partner, chef and general manager Alejandro Duran died of a heart attack in California.
