Former Longhorn All-Americans and NFL Pro Bowlers Brian Orakpo and Michael Griffin were hard hitters while playing at the University of Texas, but apparently they have a soft spot for sweets (and entrepreneurship). The two Longhorn legends are opening a Gigi’s Cupcakes in Bee Cave next year with fellow former Longhorn Bryan Hynson. It will be the third Austin-area location of the cupcake store founded in Nashville; the others are in Cedar Park and Georgetown. The store, located at 3944 Bldg. 2, Suite 130 FM 620 by Lake Travis, is slated to open in December.
Orakpo and Griffin, both key players on the 2005 National Champion Texas Longhorns, both played for the Tennessee Titans in Nashville when they discovered Gigi’s.
“When I moved to Nashville in 2015, one of the first things I was introduced to was a dozen of Gigi’s Cupcakes. Once my teammates gave me some, I fell in love,” Orakpo said. “Football players and cupcakes don’t exactly go hand and hand, but that’s what makes this so much fun. We’re family men and we know that everybody loves a good cupcake!”
Gigi’s Cupcakes opened in 2008 in Nashville and now includes more than 100 franchise in 24 states. Gigi’s serves 300 rotating cupcake flavors with sugar free and gluten free options and more.
Correction: A previous version of this blog post stated this will be the first Austin-area location of Gigi’s Cupcakes. It will be the third.
