The famed migas at Cisco’s Restaurant (1511 E. Sixth St.) are staying up past their bed time. The legendary restaurant opened in 1950 by Rudy “Cisco” Cisneros has long been known for its breakfast tacos, biscuits and lunch plates, and now its getting in on the nighttime action of East Austin.
The restaurant recently introduced a dinner menu, which includes an expanded version of the fajitas it serves as lunch, along with taco salads, crispy tacos and those popular migas. The dinner changes follow the new ownership’s addition of beer, margaritas, Bloody Marys and screwdrivers. Cisco’s is open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
An ownership team that includes Matt Cisneros, grandson of restaurant founder and namesake Rudy “Cisco” Cisneros; Antone’s co-owner Will Bridges; commercial builder and co-owner of historic Hoffbrau Steakhouse, Rick McMinn; and Bryan Schneider purchased the longtime community favorite and regular hangout of politicos from Clovis Cisneros last year.
Chef Iliana de la Vega’s El Naranjo on Rainey Street has been one of the best options for a Mexican dinner in Austin for years. It’s now one of the best choices for lunch.
The restaurant from the chef who previously ran a restaurant of the same name in Oaxaca serves lunch Tuesday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The current menu (which can be seen here) includes empanadas with huitlacoche, a trio of tortas, several tlayudas and entrees like duck enchiladas with mole negro.
Downtown fine dining destination Counter 357 is switching things up a bit. The restaurant Eric Earthman opened in March 2015 will begin lunch service starting next Tuesday. The menu, offered Tuesday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will include items like mussels, chicken with curry and ice cream. More details are soon to come at counter3fivevii.com. The restaurant says no reservations are needed for lunch.
Spearheading the menu is new head chef Alan Delgado. He has spent the past year operating the Tumahye pop-up supper club series and previously served as sous chef at Rene Ortiz’s Launderette for about a year-and-a-half.
Kerlin BBQ (1700 E. Cesar Chavez St.) is home to some of the best barbecue in the city (it ranked 7th on our list in 2014), and a few years ago they pulled a super Texas move by adding their brisket to kolaches. For the first few years they only sold the kolaches on weekends, but now you can get kolaches every day that the East Austin trailer is open. Kolaches are sold starting at 9 a.m. Wednesday-Sunday, with barbecue sold starting at 11 a.m. In addition to the brisket and cheddar versions, there are also jalapeno-cheddar and smoked sausage kolaches and pork shoulder with Monterrey Jack cheese.
Austintes love P. Terry’s and they definitely love tacos. So much so that Taco Ranch, the new fast-casual, drive-thru Tex-Mex concept from Patrick Terry has been completely overwhelmed with business in its first week.
After selling out of food and announcing early closures the first couple of days, Terry has decided to scale back on the hours at Taco Ranch until they can get a handle on the demand.
Therefore, until further notice, the hours of Taco Ranch, which is located in a former Burger King at MoPac Boulevard and U.S. 290 (5033 U.S. 290 W.), are as follows:
6 a.m to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Update: Taco Ranch will be closed on Sundays until further notice.
Bakery, cafe and flower shop Walton’s Fancy & Staple, a longtime Market District favorite, is now open after dark. After eight years of meeting the needs of breakfast and lunch patrons, the charming spot opened by actress Sandra Bullock now features a bistro dinner menu three nights a week that includes hanger steak au poivre with field greens, avocado toast with chèvre and a soft boiled farm egg, a hamburger with tender belly bacon and Longhorn cheddar, and more. Dinner is served Thursday through Saturday from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. To celebrate the new service, Walton’s is hosting a four-course wine-paired holiday dinner on December 7. Cost is $65 per person and reservations can be made by calling 512-542-3380.
There are some changes on the way for longtime Clarksville-area favorite Cafe Josie. The restaurant will end its weekday lunch service at the end of this week, but the weekday changes does not mean the end of sunlight service at the West Sixth Street spot.
Cafe Josie will add Sunday brunch service (10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) on November 12. Following in the format of their dinner Experience (unlimited evening dining for $45), Cafe Josie will serve a Brunch Experience for $25. The menu will be set up in a tasting menu style, with diners able to choose whichever dishes they want and however much they want. See a sample menu below. Reservations are now be accepted online.
With the new brunch hours come changes to dinner, as well. Beginning next week, Cafe Josie will open at 4p.m. Monday-Saturday for happy hour, and offer a la carte offerings in addition to their Experience.

Chinese restaurant Old Thousand begins lunch service Tuesday at 11 a.m. The menu from the hip-hop-loving restaurant will serve buns, egg rolls, brisket fried rice, and much more (though a menu is not yet online).
Two new faces are joining the list of options during Austin’s two favorite dining and drinking portions of the week.
Mueller development fried chicken restaurant J.T. Youngblood’s has started weekday happy hour, Tuesda-Friday from 2 to 6 p.m. The restaurant helmed by Todd Duplechan of Lenoir is serving $3 beers, $4 cocktails and wine and $5 nuggets, wings and more.
Philip Speer’s new French-bistro-meets-Waffle-House spot Bonhomie (5350 Burnet Road) will begin brunch this weekend. Bonhomie will serve brunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The brunch menu includes a roster of pommes rosti (think fancy hash browns) made with toppings like pear butter, yogurt and chive; and foie gras gravy, cognac and a soft egg.
Asian-Southern fusion restaurant Peached Tortilla, one of Austin’s great trailer-to-restaurant successes, launches lunch service tomorrow. The menu will include items like a Thai shrimp tostada, banh mi taco, tuna poke bowl, kimchi queso and more. Lunch is served at 5520 Burnet Road from 11 a.m.to 2 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.
