Torchy’s says goodbye to Fran’s on SoCo with free tacos today

Torchy's Devil1Torchy’s Tacos is helping send off a South Congress icon in style. Fran’s Hamburgers closed on South Congress in 2013 (after 40 years in business) and modern-day Austin institution Torchy’s Tacos took over the lease. As the demolition approaches, Torchy’s will pass out tacos (first-come, first-served until they are gone) at 2 p.m., and restaurant co-founder Fran Junk, who opened the restaurant originally known as Dan’s with her husband, will be on hand to see the torch passed and share some memories of Fran’s. Torchy’s will open its flagship location later this year at 1822 South Congress Ave. with a patio and full bar. Torchy’s reps don’t have an opening date, but say build-out should take about 24 weeks.
